A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
